In the vast and fertile landscapes of the Eastern Cape, Vuyolwethu was raised by her both per paternal and maternal side with much influence from her grandmothers and great grandmothers, surrounded by the bounty of nature and nurtured by traditional farming practices. Vuyolwethu would grow up to challenge stereotypes and forge her path in a male-dominated industry, becoming a beacon of inspiration for her community. This is the story of a resilient and ambitious female farmer who dared to dream and turned her passion into a successful agribusiness.

Early Roots: A Life Close to Nature

Born and raised in the Eastern Cape, she was introduced to the world of farming from an early age. Her family relied on gardens and an array of livestock for sustenance, ensuring they seldom needed to buy food, relying on their own harvest for nourishment. As she engaged in daily chores and tended to the plants, she discovered a profound joy in nurturing the land, a feeling that would stay with her throughout her life.

Leaving Home and Discovering the Dream

Later on, she moved to Johannesburg with her parents and siblings, seeking better opportunities and pursuing education. Working in various industries, she couldn’t shake the realization that her heart yearned for a life as a female farmer. Determined to follow her passion, she enrolled in the Buhle Farmers Academy to polish her existing skills and learn more about running an Agribusiness.

The Journey to Agribusiness Success

In 2016, she graduated from the Buhle Farmers Academy, and that marked the beginning of her entrepreneurial journey. With newfound knowledge and determination, she started selling fresh produce like kale, spinach, and cabbage, all grown with care and love on her farmland. The support of her community encouraged her spirit, and she expanded her operations, hiring a tractor to clear a larger space, eventually reaching a sizeable two hectares of land.

Overcoming Challenges and Celebrating Victories

The path to success was not without obstacles. She faced non-paying customers and gender-related biases, but her resilience and adaptability allowed her to navigate through such challenges. With time and experience, she has learned how to manage to learn how to tackle various challenges within her industry.

One of her greatest joys comes from knowing that she is contributing to food security in her community. Her produce is as fresh as it gets, delivered straight from the farm to the kitchen, eliminating any middlemen. The positive feedback from her customers about the quality of her products fills her with pride and motivation to continue her mission.

In addition to her impressive achievements in the world of agribusiness, this inspiring female farmer has also embraced the spirit of giving back to her community. Recognizing the importance of supporting others on their journey to success, she contributes to a non-profit organization called Millennial Mindset Foundation.

Millennial Mindset Foundation is an NPO that focuses on empowering young individuals, particularly women, by providing them with the necessary skills, knowledge, and resources to pursue their passions and career aspirations. Sharing a deep-rooted belief in the transformative power of education and mentorship, Vuyolwethu, the farmer dedicates a portion of her agribusiness harvest to support the feeding scheme programme run by Millennial Mindset Foundation.

Sustainable Agribusiness Practices

Though modest about her achievements, she acknowledges the sustainable and organic nature of her farming practices. She relies on animal manure rather than artificial fertilizers, promoting a healthier and environmentally friendly approach to agriculture.

Dreams of a Green Future

For now, her business operates on a small scale, but her aspirations are far-reaching. She dreams of empowering other women in her community with farming skills, encouraging households to embrace gardening for self-sufficiency. She envisions the growth of her agribusiness through the introduction of greenhouses, bringing more prosperity to her venture and her community.

From the Eastern Cape to Johannesburg, from a childhood surrounded by nature to the bustling world of agribusiness, Vuyolwethu’s journey is one of resilience, determination, and passion.
